Conjunctivitis
Supplements studied for conjunctivitis.
Overview
Iodine as povidone-iodine eye drops is the only supplement indexed for conjunctivitis, with three studies in this database. In newborns, povidone-iodine may prevent ophthalmia neonatorum better than silver nitrate but similarly to antibiotic eye drops such as erythromycin.
Trial results in adults with conjunctivitis are mixed across formulations and active comparators. Overall evidence suggests a possible role in certain prophylactic settings but not consistent superiority across all infection types and populations studied. See the evidence reviews below for infection-type detail.
