Anxiety

Supplements studied for anxiety.

Overview

SupplementDEX indexes 14 supplements for anxiety across 70 studies. Ashwagandha has the strongest rating (WA 76, high effect size, evidence, and trust).

Reviews of several trials found moderate anxiety improvement with ashwagandha doses ranging widely, though study designs varied. Kava (WA 68; medium effect size, very high evidence, medium trust) at 150–400 mg daily of standardized kavalactones may reduce general anxiety after several weeks of regular use, with effects that may resemble some prescription medicines in trials.

Apigenin (WA 60; medium effect size, evidence, and trust), Ginkgo (EGb 761), and Rhodiola (WA 56; medium effect size, low evidence, medium trust) have more limited evidence—often from one or two studies. Rhodiola showed small improvements in one short student trial. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for all 14 supplements.
