Supplements studied for celiac disease.
Overview
Inulin is the only supplement with trials for celiac disease in this review, with two pediatric studies. In children with celiac disease and malabsorption, a prebiotic supplement containing inulin taken for three months appeared to improve absorption of vitamin D, vitamin E, and iron.
The same intervention lowered hepcidin, a protein that can block iron uptake and contribute to anemia. Evidence is limited to small trials in children, so broader conclusions about inulin for celiac disease management are not yet supported. See the evidence reviews below for trial details.
