Cocaine dependence
Supplements studied for cocaine dependence.
Overview
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and Tyrosine each have one early trial for cocaine dependence in this database. NAC 600 mg twice daily for two days did not reduce cravings or withdrawal symptoms during hospitalization for cocaine addiction compared with usual care.
Tyrosine combined with tryptophan for two weeks likewise failed to improve cravings or withdrawal compared with placebo in a small study. Evidence is preliminary and does not support either supplement as an effective treatment for cocaine dependence. See the evidence reviews below for trial specifics.
