Premature rupture of membranes

Supplements studied for premature rupture of membranes.

Overview

Selenium is the only supplement studied for premature rupture of membranes (PROM), with one trial. In that study, women who took 100 mcg of selenium daily throughout pregnancy had fewer cases of PROM than those who received placebo. However, it is not yet certain whether selenium supplementation reliably prevents early breaking of the amniotic membranes.

With only a single study available, evidence remains preliminary. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for details.
