Overview
Among supplements studied for prediabetes, Vitamin D has the most research (15 studies). Trials suggest it may help slow progression to type-2-diabetes, particularly in people with low vitamin D levels, though benefits on blood sugar measures vary. Inulin (4 studies) shows mixed results—some trials found modest insulin-handling improvements at about 15 grams daily, while smaller studies found no benefit.
Flaxseed did not improve blood sugar control in prediabetes trials, though it may slightly lower systolic blood pressure. A single artichoke extract study reported improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol, and body fat. Evidence for L-Carnitine and several other supplements remains insufficient.
