Hyperthyroidism
Supplements studied for hyperthyroidism.
Overview
Three supplements are indexed for hyperthyroidism (4 studies), all at WA 44 with low ratings. Selenium (2 studies) showed mixed results in Graves' disease—one trial found no symptom benefit added to usual care; another suggested possible hormone and quality-of-life improvements when combined with vitamin D.
L-Carnitine (1 study) may improve symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and fatigue at 2–4 g daily over months. Vitamin D (1 study) with selenium and usual medication lowered one thyroid hormone and improved quality of life without changing other hormone or antibody levels.
