Stress

Supplements studied for stress.

Overview

Ashwagandha has the strongest evidence among supplements studied for stress, with high effect-size, evidence, and trust ratings across seven trials. Doses of 240–1000 mg daily for eight to 12 weeks may reduce stress feelings and cortisol levels, though not every study found benefit over placebo.

Theanine, Rhodiola, Kava, and GABA show more limited support. Theanine (medium ratings) may lower stress scores and improve sleep in some people, especially around stressful events. Rhodiola (medium ratings) reduced stress and improved functioning in adults with general stress or burnout. Kava and GABA carry low ratings, with only small or inconclusive trials. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for evidence across 16 supplements.
