Muscle Cramps

Supplements studied for muscle cramps.

Overview

Magnesium supplements taken for a few weeks do not reduce muscle cramps better than no treatment across three studies in healthy people, pregnant women, and those with liver cirrhosis. Biotin at 1 mg daily may reduce frequency and severity of dialysis-related cramps within a week in a small study without a placebo group.

L-Carnitine at 300 mg twice daily for four months reduced cramps from about four times a month to about one in adults with type 2 type-2-diabetes, though the lack of a placebo group makes results less certain. See the heatmap and evidence reviews below for details.
