Breath holding
Supplements studied for breath holding.
Overview
Only Iron is indexed for breath-holding spells, with three studies and medium ratings (WA 68) for effect size, evidence, and trust.
Children with low iron levels or iron-deficiency anemia are more likely to have breath-holding spells. Oral iron supplements such as ferrous sulfate daily for four to 16 weeks reduced episode frequency in most studied children. Some early data also suggest possible benefit from iron injections, possibly by raising iron and blood levels.
Doctors often consider iron supplementation for affected children even without frank anemia. See the evidence reviews below for trial detail.
