Overview
What are beta-glucans?
Beta-glucans are a type of soluble fiber that is found in oats and barley. Beta-glucans are the fibers found in the cell walls of cereals, fungi, and bacteria, composed of glucose molecules linked by β-glycosidic bonds. Their structure varies by source, influencing their biological effects, with cereal beta-glucans supporting metabolic health and fungal beta-glucans known for immune modulation. Greater intake of beta-glucans may reduce the risk of heart disease and reduce cholesterol absorption from foods.
Dosage
A typical dose of 3 grams per day beta-glucans (barley and oats) has been used for lowering cholesterol, blood glucose and insulin.
A typical dose of yeast-derived beta-glucans is 250 mg per day.
