Overview
What is berberine?
Berberine is a bitter-tasting chemical that may improve blood sugar control and improve some markers of heart health.
Berberine is a plant alkaloid used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, known for its potent blood sugar-lowering effects comparable to some anti-diabetic drugs. It is found in plants like barberry and Oregon grape and traditionally used as an antimicrobial and antidiarrheal agent. Research shows berberine improves glycemic control, blood lipids, liver function, and body weight in people with metabolic disorders, with promising anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Dosage
A typical dose of berberine is 400–2,000 mg per day, taken in split doses with meals.
Most people should start with a dose on the lower end of this range to reduce the likelihood of side effects including gastrointestinal upset and stomach pain.
