Overview

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (or hormone) essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption in the gut, supporting bone health and mineralization. It is produced in the skin through sunlight exposure and obtained from some foods and supplements. Once activated in the liver and kidneys, it regulates calcium levels, immune function, and cell growth. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone disorders like rickets and osteomalacia. It also influences inflammation and overall immune response.​

Dosage

A typical dose of vitamin D is 600 IU per day but higher doses of up to 4000 IU or higher per day are commonly taken.
