Overview

What is caffeine?

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea and many other natural sources. It works mainly by blocking adenosine receptors, and increasing release of stimulating neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine. Although it has some side effects, caffeine is commonly consumed through beverages like coffee and tea.

Dosage

A typical dose of caffeine for athletic performance used in studies is around 3–6 mg per kilogram of bodyweight (around 180–360 mg in a 60 kg person).

A cup of coffee provides 50–200 mg caffeine. A cup of green tea provides 20–50 mg caffeine. A cup of black tea provides 20–100 mg caffeine.
