Diabetic foot ulcers

Supplements studied for diabetic foot ulcers.

Overview

Iodine as cadexomer iodine ointment (Iodosorb) has medium evidence (WA 56, one study): 12 weeks of use healed wounds about as well as common topical treatments in a small diabetic foot ulcer trial.

Vitamin D, Aloe, Flaxseed Oil, and Lysine rest on one or two small studies with low trust. Vitamin D may slightly reduce ulcer size; aloe with plantain plus antibiotics improved healing in one trial; flaxseed oil with antibiotics may shrink ulcers; a 15% lysine cream sped healing in one unblinded study. The heatmap and evidence reviews below cover all six supplements.
