A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in highly myopic patients (axial length >26 mm) showing that lutein (20 mg/day) for 6 months increased macular pigment optical density in the subgroup with axial length under ~28.25 mm, though overall group differences were not statistically significant.
