Overview

Only one supplement—Vitamin A—is indexed for graft-versus-host disease, based on a single low-rated study (WA 44; low effect size, low evidence, medium trust; 1 study). That trial found a high pre-transplant vitamin A dose given about a week before stem cell transplant may lower the chance of long-term graft-versus-host disease in young patients with low vitamin A levels.

However, vitamin A did not appear to reduce early or gut-related GVHD in that study. Patients with low vitamin D also received vitamin D supplements during the trial, which limits how much can be attributed to vitamin A alone. Overall evidence is very limited. See the evidence review below.
