Taking fish oil during pregnancy may help protect children against stomach flu (gastroenteritis) in early childhood.
A study where pregnant women took 2.4 grams of fish oil daily from about 6 months of pregnancy until one week after birth found their children had fewer days (2.5 days less, or 14% less) with stomach flu in the first 3 years compared to women who took olive oil.
The children also had about 16% fewer stomach flu episodes and were 20% less likely to get sick.
Benefits were mostly seen during winter and in children whose mothers had lower fish oil levels before pregnancy.
More studies are needed to know if fish oil helps kids or adults with stomach flu.

Randomized trial evaluating maternal fish oil supplementation during pregnancy, showing reduced gastroenteritis incidence in early childhood. A study of 736 mothers found triacylglycerol omega-3 supplements (Incromega TG33/22, 2.4 g/day) taken from pregnancy week 24 until one week postpartum led to a 14% reduction in days with gastroenteritis in the first 3 years of the child’s life (-2.5 days), and a 23% reduction in women with low levels of preintervention EPA + DHA, with significant effects only during winter and stronger effects seen in the first 2 years of life.
