Lycopene, the natural red pigment in tomatoes and other fruits, may help lower blood sugar.
In a review of studies involving 750 people, lycopene showed a small overall effect in reducing fasting blood sugar.
In people with type 2 diabetes, the benefit was clearer, with noticeable improvements.
Most studies were of moderate quality, but overall, lycopene appears to support blood sugar control, particularly in those with diabetes.

A meta-analysis of 11 trial arms (n=750) found lycopene intake trended toward lower fasting blood glucose (SMD −0.15, p=0.05), with a significant reduction in type 2 diabetes patients (SMD −0.37, n=152).
