Evidence Review

Research shows that using a povidone-iodine wash in the vagina just before a cesarean delivery can help lower the risk of infection afterward.
It reduces the chance of a serious womb infection by more than half and also lowers the risk of fever and wound infection.
The benefit is seen with different strengths of the solution, from 1% to 10%.
Other antiseptics like chlorhexidine or metronidazole may work just as well, but more studies are needed to be sure.
