What is potassium?
Potassium is an essential nutrient. It plays a vital role in heart, muscle and nerve function. It also regulates fluid balance by moving nutrients into cells and waste out. Potassium salts are used in low-sodium diets to help lower high blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. A potassium-rich diet protects against osteoporosis and may help prevent kidney stones.
Dosage
The adequate intake of potassium per day is 2,600 mg for adult females and 3,400 mg for adult males. For children aged 9–13 years the AI is 2,300–2,500 mg per day. For ages 14–18 years the AI is 2,300 mg per day for females and 3,000 mg per day for males.
