Iron is essential for oxygen transport. Supplements correct deficiency but excess iron can cause harm.
Overview
What is iron?
Iron is a mineral that helps red blood cells transport oxygen. It is found in red blood cells and muscle cells.
Except for cases of iron deficiency, taking iron supplements is unproven for many conditions including athletic performance or childhood growth. Taking iron supplements is associated with gastrointestinal side effects and increased oxidative stress.
There are two main forms of iron known as heme iron and non-heme iron. Heme iron is more easily absorbed by the body and is a component of hemoproteins including hemoglobin and myoglobin. Most animal products including beef, chicken and fish contain heme and non-heme iron. Plant-based foods provide non-heme iron which is less easily absorbed by the body. However, the bioavailability of non-heme iron increases when paired with vitamin C-rich foods including citrus, strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes and raspberries.
Dosage
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of iron is 8 mg for males aged 19-50 and 18 mg for females aged 19-50.
The RDA is 8 mg for males and females aged 51 and older.
During pregnancy, the RDA is 27 mg per day.
