What is iodine?
Iodine is a mineral that is essential for thyroid hormone production.
Humans cannot produce iodine so it is often added to many food products including salt.
Supplementation may benefit those who do not consume seafood, pregnant women or those who intentionally restrict salt.
Dosage
The daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults is 150 mcg per day.
The RDA during pregnancy is 220 mcg per day, and during lactation, the RDA is 290 mcg per day.
