Overview
What is coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant that is used by the body to produce energy. It exists in the mitochondria of cells and is found in high concentrations in heart tissue.
Whilst the body naturally produces coenzyme Q10, it can also be effectively obtained through supplementation.
Levels of coenzyme Q10 in the body decrease after middle age. People who may be at increased risk of deficiency include those taking statin medications or people with genetic defects.
Coenzyme Q10 supplements are produced naturally via industrial fermentation, a cost-effective and reliable method that produces consistent products.
Dosage
A standard dose of coenzyme Q10 is 100 to 600 mg per day. Most studies use a dose of 100 to 300 mg per day for general health and to support cardiovascular health.
For exercise performance, studies have used dosages of 300 mg ubiquinol per day.
For migraine, studies have used dosages of 300-400 mg/day (3 x 100 mg, 2 x 200 mg) in adults and 1-3 mg/kg/day in children.

Other notes
Studies have safely used doses of 1200 mg per day for up to 12 months. Studies have safely used a dose tending towards the lower end of the recommended range (100-300 mg/day) for general health benefits, and a slightly higher dose (300-400 mg/day) for exercise performance and migraine. Side effects are rare but include gastrointestinal discomfort, heartburn, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The risk of side effects can be reduced by splitting the daily intake into smaller individual doses. Plasma levels of coenzyme Q10 have been found to plateau at 2400 mg per day and do not appear to increase at 3000 mg per day, however reported side effects include difficulty with complex cognitive tasks at 2400 mg/day and increased palpitations at 3000 mg/day. In pregnant women, coenzyme Q10 has been safely used at a dose of 200 mg per day from 20 weeks of pregnancy. Market Safety Report: Good. Most products meet label claims for active ingredients.

Pregabalin alone reduced pain and anxiety but not oxidative stress and inflammation at day 0, 40 or 80.

A 12-month study found that 120 mg/day coenzyme Q10 (n = 73) significantly reduced total cardiac events (24.6% vs. 45.0%, p <0.02), non-fatal infarction risk (13.7% vs 25.3%, p <0.05) and cardiac deaths compared to patients taking vitamin B (n = 71). Patients taking coenzyme Q10 had reduced fatigue (40.8% to 6.8%) and increased levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.26 +/- 0.43 vs. 1.12 +/- 0.32 mmol/L). Both groups experienced reductions in total and LDL cholesterol. Roughly half of all patients in each group (n = 36 vs. 31) were receiving 10 mg/day Lovastatin.
