Overview

What is cassia cinnamon?

Cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum) or Chinese cinnamon is a spice sourced from the inner bark of an evergreen tree. Do not confuse cassia cinnamon with other versions of cinnamon, including Ceylon cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon may harm the liver and is toxic in high quantities. Due to lower amounts of coumarin, Ceylon cinnamon is safer than cassia cinnamon.

Dosage

A typical dose of cassia cinnamon powder is 120 mg to 6 grams per day.

Safety

Cassia cinnamon is likely safe when consumed in typical amounts. However, in rare cases, prolonged intake of high doses may cause hepatotoxicity due to coumarin content. Those with liver disease should not consume excessive amounts of cassia cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon contains minimal coumarin in comparison to cassia.
