Selenium is an essential mineral and antioxidant. Excessive intake of selenium is harmful and may result in selenium toxicity or death.

Dosage

A typical dose found in supplements containing selenium is 50 to 200 mcg per day.

The recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for selenium are 55 mcg for adults aged 19 years or older, 60 mcg for pregnant women and 70 mcg for lactating women.

The tolerable upper intake level of selenium is 400 mcg per day. Long-term consumption of selenium exceeding 55 mcg per day is associated with development of type 2 diabetes and higher selenium levels in the serum are associated with increased mortality.
