Overview

What is saw palmetto?

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a tree or small palm. The fruit of the tree is used for its effects on testosterone.

Saw palmetto blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is linked to hair loss. Saw palmetto may support hair regrowth and is also used to relieve benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urinary symptoms, though evidence is mixed. More well-designed studies are needed to confirm these benefits.

Dosage

A typical dose of saw palmetto is 160–320 mg per day.
