Evidence Review

A study of over 1,400 mothers and their children found that women who drank tea consistently during pregnancy had children with better thinking and motor skills at around 3 years old compared to those who only drank tea early in pregnancy.
Drinking tea in the second and third trimesters was especially linked to these benefits.
Drinking coffee during pregnancy did not appear to affect children’s development.

In 1,423 Chinese mother-child pairs, maternal tea drinking throughout pregnancy was associated with higher child cognition, fine motor, and gross motor scores at ~36 months versus tea only in the first trimester; coffee showed no association.
