Evidence Review

It is not certain if mouthwash with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) helps with dry mouth caused by radiation treatment.
A small study found that using an NAC mouth rinse during and after radiation treatment for head and neck cancer improved dry mouth and sticky saliva during the day and overall by about 38%, but it did not help with dry mouth at nighttime.

A pilot double-blind RCT in 32 head and neck chemoradiotherapy patients found 10% NAC rinse (2500 mg/day) safe and improved sticky saliva and xerostomia by patient report, though mucositis endpoints were not clearly superior.
